Mammoth Cave - Going Home

Time to pack up from the resort in Tennessee

and head home.

But the Skifton's never just "go home"

We'll have to find some fun stops a long the way!

Let's take this map of soil types in the United States.

Idaho is all red and volcanic.

We trekked on down to the opening of Mammoth Cave.

We could have been here for days!

It really is a mammoth.

But we settled on a smaller one, since the kids are little

and you needed to make advanced reservations for the others.

haha

The Kentucky air was hot and humid,

but he'll need a hoodie where we are going.

Walking down the entrance,

you could feel a gust of cool air!

It was really refreshing after hiking down in the humidity.

WOW! LOOK AT IT! ISN'T IT INCREDIBLE!

It was cool,

but it was like paved sidewalks the whole time,

and lights everywhere.

I didn't really feel like I was "spelunking" per se.

But it was perfect for the likes of Cora.

Especially with lots of places to rest along the way!

The ceiling was fascinating.

It would be really low and then all of the sudden sky-high!

These strong kids keeping it up!

This was one of the times it was actually quite high.

They have found remnants of life in this cave from prehistoric times!

Then later, slaves were sent to work down here 

to mine for the ingredients in gunpowder during the War of 1812.

Dark history.

We made it through without seeing any bats!

(You had to be "trained" before you went in

on what to do if you see bats)

And now as we go up the stairs,

the air again gets heavy, humid and hot...

...see?

And we get to hike back up to the RV

With the best oldest brother,

willing to play along with Cora's crazy games.

And carry her sweatshirt!

Infinity!

It's a sign!

We're going to be together forever.

As cool as it was down in the cave,

The hike was just as lovely as the cave,

just hotter.

We earned a nice feast at our favorite mid-west restaurant.

PIZZA RANCH!

I feel like Andy on Toy Story!

"PIZZA PLANET!"

We played games for hours.

This game was to see who could pitch the best baseball.

Richard won.
